The Faraday effect (EF) of single-crystal of dysprosium orthoaluminate (DyAlO3) was investigatedin the wavelength range 440–750 nm in the visible region of the spectrum at temperaturesof 90 K and 300 K. Magnetic susceptibility was nvestigated in the temperature range 78–300 K along the crystallographic axes a and b of the orthorhombic crystal. The constructedlinear dependence of the Verdet constant V on the magnetic susceptibility of the DyAlO3 crystalat a wavelength of 510 nm made it possible to calculate the value of the “paramagnetic”Verdet constant C of the DyAlO3 orthoaluminate. Its value was (6.51±0.3)×103 min/(cm⋅Oe),which is several times higher than the corresponding value determined from EF measurementsin rare earth dysprosium garnet aluminate. It was found that the influence of the low-symmetrycrystal field acting in the structure of an orthorhombic crystal on the excited states of a magnetoactiveion arising from the mixed 4f(n-1)5d configuration of the rare earth ion is the most possiblephysical reason for the difference in the contributions of allowed 4f→5d transitions to themagnetooptics of the Dy3+ ion in crystals of garnets and orthoaluminates.
