Annotatsiya

In the second half of the twentieth century, the USSR's cotton monoculture led to the development of dry and arable lands and the development of cotton growing, creating new water networks. Several reservoirs and canals were excavated. Examples include the Big Fergana Canal (1939) and the Big Andijan Canal (1965). Syrdarya water was used to supply these water networks. As a result, in the 60s and 70s of the XX century, the river water level decreased, and eventually the Aral Sea was not supplied with water. This situation was also observed in the Amudarya, as a result of which the water volume of the Aral Sea decreased from year to year and became a global problem. This article discusses the environmental problems caused by the Soviet Union's cotton monoculture in the second half of the twentieth century, which was caused by the development of dry and arable lands.
