Diffuse toxic goiter (Graves' disease) and autoimmune thyroiditis (Hoshimoto's goiter) as the main autoimmune thyropathies, require a number of immunodiagnostic studies. It is well known that the pathogenesis and development of complications of autoimmune diseases depend on the titers of autoantibodies in the blood serum; they are also used as a diagnostic marker of these diseases. An important role of elevated levels of antithyroid autoantibodies in the pathogenesis, course and prognosis of thyroid diseases has been shown. The identification of Ab-r TSH, Ab-TPO and Ab-TG as the most common thyroid autoantibodies is currently of great importance in the diagnosis of endocrine diseases. This review included literature data on the role of the antithyroid autoantibodies in pathogenesis and development of complication of thyroid diseases.
