The antioxidant defense system is a complex, multi-component network of physiologically active substances, comprising enzymatic and non-enzymatic compounds that work sequentially, complementing each other, thereby controlling oxidative reactions and inactivating a wide range of toxic products. It is through the coordinated interaction of antioxidant enzymes that oxidative processes are maintained at the level necessary for the normal functioning of numerous physiological processes at the cellular level. When the processes of ROS formation and neutralization spiral out of control, the balance between the intensity of prooxidant and antioxidant reactions is disrupted, leading to the accumulation of free radical oxidation products and the development of oxidative stress (OS). This damages various cellular structures and disrupts biochemical processes, ultimately leading to the development of persistent pathological conditions and diseases affecting virtually all human systems and organs.
