Annotatsiya

The article examines the linguocultural patterns underlying the semantic development of polysemous idioms in English, Russian, and Uzbek. The aim of the study is to identify the universal and language-specific factors that shape the emergence of new idiomatic meanings from a comparative perspective. The research material consists of polysemous idioms selected from authoritative phraseological dictionaries of the three languages. The study employs comparative, linguocultural, cognitive-semantic, componential, and descriptive methods. The findings demonstrate that the semantic development of idioms is driven by universal cognitive mechanisms, including conceptual metaphor, metonymy, generalization, and semantic specialization, while the direction of semantic evolution is determined by the cultural and linguistic characteristics of each language.
