Annotatsiya

This article explores the theoretical concepts of politeness and lying within the framework of sociolinguistics. Based on Spanish language data, the study analyzes the politeness theory (Brown & Levinson’s model) and the role of lying as a communicative strategy. Special attention is given to the phenomenon of “mentira piadosa” (white lie), as well as to strategies such as euphemization, indirect speech, and mitigation. The findings suggest that lying and politeness function as key tools for maintaining social balance, preventing conflicts, and fostering positive communicative interaction.
