This article analyzes the main literary and aesthetic movements that emerged in the second half of the 19th century and throughout the 20th century – Romanticism, Realism, Modernism, and Postmodernism – from the perspective of their content and essence. The historical and philosophical foundations of each movement, their ideological and aesthetic characteristics, as well as their manifestation in the works of prominent representatives of English and American literature are examined. While Romanticism emphasizes the human inner world and harmony with nature, Realism focuses on portraying social realities and individual challenges. In contrast, Modernism and Postmodernism emphasize formal and thematic experimentation. The evolution of literary thought is assessed through the lens of contemporary theoretical approaches.
