Annotatsiya

This article discusses Phraseology, a branch of linguistics that has developed into an independent field of study. It examines the historical origins of phraseology, its establishment as a distinct discipline, and the scholars who have conducted research in this field both globally and within Uzbek linguistics. Some sources indicate that the roots of phraseology can be traced back to Russian linguistics, while others attribute its emergence to the Geneva School of Grammar, particularly to the renowned Swiss linguist Charles Bally, who is considered to have introduced the concept. In Uzbek linguistics, the contributions of scholars such as Ya. Pinkhasov,        M. Khusainov, I. Kuchkurtayev, Sh. Rakhmatullayev, and A. Mamatov are especially noteworthy. According to the theories developed by these scholars, phraseological units can be classified into various groups, which can be illustrated and explained with the help of examples. Given that Uzbek belongs to the Turkic language family and English to the Indo-European (specifically Germanic) language family, we can observe both similarities and differences in their phraseological units. These can generally be categorized into three types: In the first type, there is a clear and strong connection between the literal meaning of the words and their phraseological (idiomatic) meaning; In the second type, this connection is only partially evident; In the third type, the connection between the literal meanings of the words and the overall phraseological meaning is completely lost.
