This article examines the cognitive theory of incongruity and the frame‑shifting methodology (Coulson, 2001) that underlie the processing of metaphoric polysemy in humor. Through a comparative psycholinguistic experiment with English and Uzbek native speakers, we analyze differences in reaction times and humor evaluations when listeners “shift” from a literal to a metaphorical frame, producing the comic “insight.” Using reaction‑time measures and standardized humor rating scales, the study uncovers significant cross‑linguistic variations in frame‑shifting processes. The findings have implications for cognitive linguistics, translation studies, and humor pedagogy.
