This article investigates the emergence and flourishing of African American urban fiction – also known as street literature – as a transformative genre that became both a “window” and a “mirror” for Black adolescents. Drawing on key studies (Gates & Appiah, 2014; Rose, 2015; McMonigal, 2018), it explores how urban fiction dismantles traditional stereotypes of Black femininity and offers authentic narratives of city life. Through a systematic literature review, critical discourse analysis, and comparative typology, the study identifies the socio‑cultural forces and narrative strategies that underpin the genre’s rise. Findings illuminate the genre’s role in shaping identity, community discourse, and market dynamics, with implications for cultural studies and publishing research.
