P. Borodin, N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov, and C. A. Cui. The composers drew on the traditions of M. I. Glinka and A. S. Dargomyzhsky, actively utilized Russian folklore, historical themes, and folk imagery, and sought to realistically reflect the life of the people and affirm the national identity of music. At the same time, the creative work of P. I. Tchaikovsky was developing, as were the activities of A. G. and N. G. Rubinstein, aimed at professionalizing music education. During these years, the Russian Musical Society (1859), conservatories in St. Petersburg (1862) and Moscow (1866), Free Music School.
