Multilingual communities are dynamic linguistic ecologies where languages and varieties co-exist, influence each other, and evolve over time. Language use in such settings is shaped by a web of sociocultural factors, including identity construction, power relations, social stratification, and speakers’ ideologies. In recent decades, sociolinguists have devoted increasing attention to understanding how language variation intersects with local cultural practices, mobility, education, and media consumption. This study provides a comprehensive survey of key sociolinguistic concepts, theoretical frameworks, and methodological approaches employed in the investigation of language variation and sociocultural factors in multilingual contexts. Drawing on empirical research conducted in various regions—ranging from urban immigrant neighborhoods in Europe to postcolonial societies in Asia and Africa—we examine patterns of code-switching, code-mixing, language shift, and style-shifting, as well as their implications for group identity, language maintenance, and language policy. The paper highlights the interplay between socio-political, economic, and cultural forces that shape linguistic repertoires and practices, and considers recent theoretical advances such as translanguaging. Finally, we emphasize the importance of interdisciplinary, ethnographically grounded, and community-centered approaches to better understand the complexities of language variation in multilingual communities.
