The article analyzes the socio-cultural and intellectual environment that influenced the philosophical formation of Abulhasan Bahmanyar ibn Marzban, who lived and created in the 11th century. Although Bahmanyar’s personal work is largely associated with the school of Ibn Sina, it is insufficient to interpret him merely as a commentator on his master’s teachings. The scientific circles formed around Iran, Azerbaijan, Hamadan, and Isfahan during his lifetime, the status of the Arabic language as the language of science, the adaptation of the Greek philosophical heritage in the thought of the Muslim East, as well as the debates between religion, kalam, and philosophy, formed the main historical basis of Bahmanyar’s worldview.
