The purpose of this article is to compare approaches to the study of lacunae from the point of view of cultural studies and translation studies, as well as to generalize the findings. Based on the analysis, an attempt was made to determine the status of the concept of "lacuna" in the scientific apparatus of translation theory, for which the views of a number of translation scholars on this concept were considered.
