This article examines the origin and interpretation of the name of theShaybanid dynasty and its founder, Muhammad Shaybani Khan, from a historiographical andsource-studies perspective. It compares the various name forms found in historical sources(Shahibek, Shayboq, Shabon, Shaybani, and others) and systematizes existing scholarly views ontheir etymology (V. Barthold, V. Radloff, A. Z. Validi Togan, M. Tojiboyev, and others). The articlealso considers the arguments for referring to the dynasty as the "Abu'l-Khayrids" rather than the"Shaybanids."
