The article examines the ontological foundations of technology through the relationship between material tools, activity, knowledgeand culture. The function of a technical object is considered in relation to its structure, human purposes, practical knowledge andsocial organization. The study uses conceptual and historical-comparative analysis. It discusses the limits of viewing technologyas a neutral instrument and clarifies the roles of engineering creativity and the human factor. Technological development is assessedin terms of efficiency and responsible human participation.
