The article analyzes, from the perspectives of source studies and textual criticism, the critical edition of “Rasā’il al-Khwarizmi” (The Epistles of al-Khwarizmi) by the prominent poet, writer, and scholar Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn al-Abbas al-Khwarizmi al-Tabarakhazi (323–383 AH/935–993 CE), who was born and raised in Khwarazm in the tenth century and subsequently travelled throughout the Islamic East, acquiring scholarly knowledge and disseminating learning. The study focuses on the critical edition prepared by the Iranian researcher Muhammad Mahdi Purgul in Tehran in 2005. The manuscript base of the edition, the criteria for selecting the base manuscript, and the principles of textual editing are examined. Based on an assessment of the edition from the perspective of modern textual criticism, it is argued that, in terms of its nature, the edition more closely approximates the category of a synoptic-comparative text. The results of the study demonstrate the need to establish a scholarly critical text of al-Khwarizmi’s “Rasā’il” based on more than twenty manuscript copies of the work known to date.
