The article investigates elliptical constructions within the headline genre from a functional standpoint. The licensing conditions of ellipsis, its cohesive nature and the ways of identifying the omitted constituent are compared on Uzbek and English material. Headline ellipsis is divided into context-dependent ellipsis and ellipsis licensed by genre convention, and the recovery mechanism is described for each type.
