The representation of female psychology in XIX century dramaturgy

Annotatsiya

The article offers a comparative study of the artistic interpretation of female psychology in 19thcentury Russian and English drama, based on A.N.Ostrovsky’s “The Dowryless Girl” (1878) and G.B.Shaw’s “Mrs Warren’s Profession” (1893). Using comparative-typological, psychological and structural-semiotic analysis, the study establishes that Ostrovsky reveals female psychology through the heart, that is, emotional experience, while Shaw reveals it through the intellect, that is, rational choice. It is argued that thecommodification of women is the central problem in both plays, yet the heroines respond to it in fundamentally different ways. The results may be used in teaching comparative literature and the history of European drama.
