The paper compares two approaches to classroom assignment whenlesson times are fixed in advance: sequential room selection for each lesson and jointassignment of rooms to all lessons in a time slot. Room suitability is scored bycapacity, room type and department. Room availability, sufficient capacity andrequired equipment are mandatory conditions for all methods. In 15 synthetic testinstances constructed so that complete assignment is possible, the exact methodassigned rooms to all 480 lessons. The greedy method assigned rooms to 451 lessonswhen lessons were processed in ID order and to 465 when larger groups were givenpriority, leaving 3.1–6.0% of lessons without a room. These findings need to beverified on real university timetables.
