Learners’ perceptions of authentic media-based strategies for developing english monologic speaking skills: evidence from uzbek academic lyceums

Monologic speaking is one of the most demanding productive skills for learners of English as a foreign language (EFL), yet it remains underdeveloped in many Uzbek academic lyceums, where instruction is often shaped by examination-oriented routines and limited exposure to naturally occurring language. This study examined how learners in two academic lyceums in the Tashkent region perceived the use of authentic media—podcasts, video clips, TED-Ed talks, and songs—as a strategy for developing monologic speaking skills such as retelling, summarizing, and short oral presentations. Using an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, data were collected from 68 first- and second-year lyceum learners (CEFR B1–B2) through a 23-item Likert-scale questionnaire administered after an eight-week instructional intervention, and from semi-structured interviews with eight volunteer participants. Descriptive statistics showed that learners rated authentic media positively for motivation and engagement (M = 4.31, SD = 0.52) and moderately for speaking confidence (M = 3.86, SD = 0.61), while perceived difficulty remained comparatively high (M = 3.42, SD = 0.74), largely attributable to fast native-speaker speech rate and unfamiliar idiomatic language. Thematic analysis of the interview data identified five recurring themes: increased motivation, growing confidence through repeated modeling, vocabulary and pronunciation gains, comprehension-related challenges, and a desire for greater teacher scaffolding. The findings suggest that authentic media can meaningfully support monologic speaking development when accompanied by graded difficulty, pre-listening preparation, and structured follow-up tasks. Implications for lyceum curriculum design and teacher training in Uzbekistan are discussed.
