Annotatsiya

The article examines the formation of the literary language in the literary milieu of Movarounnahr during the reign of Amir Temur and the Timurids, as well as its close connection with the living spoken language of the people. Drawing on the concrete material of the divan of Bisoti Samarqandi – one of the leading representatives of the Samarkand literary milieu of the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries – and on numerous poetic examples, the study shows how elements of folk speech (words, phrases, proverbs and sayings, and morphological devices typical of oral discourse) entered the high literary language of the period and gave rise to the «sahli mumtane’» style. The role of the «mujobot» trend in refining literary norms and the influence of Bisoti’s language on later poets, notably Abdurahmon Jomi, are also analysed. The author concludes that the convergence of the literary and spoken languages in this period was not an individual trait of a single poet but a general tendency of the literary milieu of Movarounnahr.
