Using communicative language teaching to improve english-speaking skills among uzbek university students

Annotatsiya

Developing effective English-speaking skills remains one of the major challenges in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education. Although university students in Uzbekistan receive systematic instruction in English grammar, vocabulary, reading, and writing, many learners still experience difficulties when they are required to communicate spontaneously in English. Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) provides an alternative pedagogical framework that focuses on meaningful interaction, learner participation, authentic communication, and the practical use of language. This article examines the potential of CLT for improving the speaking skills of Uzbek university students. Particular attention is given to communicative activities such as pair work, group discussions, role plays, information-gap tasks, debates, and problem-solving activities. The article argues that systematic implementation of these activities can contribute to improvements in students’ speaking fluency, accuracy, vocabulary use, interactional competence, and confidence.
