Wedding and funeral rituals as cognitive frames in english and karakalpak: a frame-based analysis

The article examines wedding and funeral ritual vocabulary in English and Karakalpak from a cognitive perspective. The main purpose is to show that ritual words and expressions cannot always be fully understood through their direct lexical meanings because they activate wider structures of cultural knowledge. The study applies the concept of a cognitive frame to the analysis of ritual vocabulary. A frame is understood as a structured body of knowledge that brings together participants, actions, objects, social roles, expectations and culturally established sequences of events. The analysis focuses on wedding and funeral rituals because these two domains are found in both cultures but are organized through different cultural practices and linguistic expressions. Particular attention is paid to such units as bride, wedding ceremony, kelin, toy, betashar, janaza, kóńil aytıw and condolence expressions. The comparison shows that English and Karakalpak share broad conceptual grames related to marriage, family, death and mourning, while the internal organization of these frames may differ considerably. The study argues that frame-based analysis provides a useful way of revealing cultural information encoded in ritual vocabulary.
