Annotatsiya

This article examines the forms and methods of interaction between Islamic institutions and Soviet propaganda in the Uzbek SSR during the Great Patriotic War. The source base comprises published archival documents from the Central State Archive of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Archive of the Presidential Office of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and Russian federal archives, as well as texts of patriotic appeals and fatwas and relevant Uzbek- and Russian-language historiography. The study proposes a periodization of this interaction consisting of three stages: the spontaneous mobilization of believers (June 1941–October 1942), the legitimization of religious patriotism (November 1942–October 1943), and its institutionalization through the Spiritual Administration of the Muslims of Central Asia and Kazakhstan (SADUM) under the supervision of authorized representatives of the Council for the Affairs of Religious Cults (October 1943–1945). Four principal forms of interaction are systematized: ideological, material and mobilizational, foreign-policy, and administrative and supervisory. The findings demonstrate that this interaction was reciprocal but asymmetric: initiatives originating among believers and the Muslim clergy were utilized by the Soviet state as a resource for domestic mobilization and foreign propaganda, while the wartime “religious thaw” remained constrained by military and political expediency. The study also addresses discrepancies in the historiography concerning the dates of the first SADUM congress and the earliest patriotic appeals issued by Muslim religious authorities.
