Predictive AI for personalized second language learning: developing a digital model to predict learner difficulties and optimize language instruction

The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), learning analytics, and adaptive educational technologies has created new opportunities for personalized second language (L2) learning. Traditional language instruction often relies on standardized curricula and periodic assessments, which may not adequately identify individual learners’ difficulties before they become persistent. Predictive artificial intelligence (Predictive AI) enables the analysis of learner-generated data, the identification of patterns associated with learning difficulties, the prediction of potential learning problems, and the recommendation of appropriate instructional interventions. This study aims to develop a conceptual digital model for Predictive AI-supported personalized second language learning. A conceptual-analytical research design was employed, involving the analysis and synthesis of recent studies on artificial intelligence in language education, adaptive learning, learning analytics, intelligent tutoring systems, learner profiling, personalized instruction, and self-regulated learning. The analysis indicates that AI-supported language learning can provide individualized feedback, adaptive learning pathways, diagnostic assessment, and personalized learning resources. However, existing research has placed greater emphasis on automated feedback and intelligent tutoring systems than on predictive learner profiling and the early identification of learning difficulties. Based on these findings, the study proposes the Predictive AI Personalized Language Learning Model (PAI-PLL Model), which comprises six interconnected stages: learner data collection, learner profiling, difficulty prediction, personalized recommendation, adaptive instruction, and continuous monitoring. The model integrates linguistic, behavioral, performance-based, and learning-process indicators while emphasizing teacher oversight and the ethical use of data. The proposed model conceptualizes Predictive AI as a decision-support mechanism rather than an autonomous replacement for teachers. Its principal contribution lies in integrating predictive analytics and personalized L2 instruction into a continuous preventive learning cycle. The model provides a theoretical and methodological foundation for future empirical research aimed at developing intelligent language-learning environments capable of identifying learner difficulties at an early stage and optimizing instructional decision-making.
