The issue of the age of the city of Bukhara in the “Bukhara haqiqati” newspaper: an analysis of written sources and archaeological research

Annotatsiya

This article offers a comparative analysis of written sources and archaeological findings accumulated in Uzbek and Soviet historiography concerning the age of the city of Bukhara. It examines the legend of Siyovush recorded in the tenth-century historian Muhammad Narshakhi’s “History of Bukhara” alongside the results of archaeological expeditions led by O.V. Obelchenko, R. Sulaymonov, and Ya.G. G‘ulomov conducted between 1968 and 1981 at the Ark citadel, the Shahriston quarter, and the site of Paykand. The study demonstrates that the earliest cultural layers of the city date to the fourth-third centuries BCE, confirming that Bukhara possesses a history of approximately 2,300-2,500 years. The article further substantiates the importance of a combined methodology, uniting written and material sources, for a more precise determination of the city's age.
