This article analyzes the role of sanctions in contemporary international relations and examines their theoretical foundations at the intersection of the concepts of “soft power” and “hard power”. The author considers sanctions not only as instruments of economic and political coercion but also as mechanisms for promoting compliance with international legal norms and protecting human rights. The article further examines the shift from comprehensive embargoes toward “smart sanctions”, the role of international law and United Nations mechanisms in the imposition and implementation of sanctions, and the implications of unilateral sanctions for global security.
