The article examines a key element in the training of professional oral music performers – mastering the aruz versification system, which originated in Arabic poetry and was further developed in the Persian and Turkic poetic traditions, which are deeply rooted in the cultures of the Middle East and Central Asia. Aruz forms an essential rhythmic basis for both classical poetry and musical works of the maqom tradition. Using the example of the Maqom Academy in Dushanbe, founded by People’s Artist of Tajikistan Abduvali Abdulmajidovich Abdurashidov, the article examines the stages of aruz training for a maqom student: intensive study of the rhythmic principles of music and poetry, mastering the techniques of playing the doira (Tajik frame drum) and understanding its rhythmic formulas (usul). Particular attention is paid to pedagogical methods that integrate versification with musical thinking within the framework of the traditional ustod-shogird (master-student) system. Mastery of aruz allows performers to select poems with different metric structures and include them in musical performance, achieving a high degree of artistic expression and improvisational freedom, combining poetic recitation with instrumental rhythm.
