Annotatsiya

The article is devoted to the scientific and public activities of Doctor of Arts, Professor, Honoured Scientist of Uzbekistan Faizulla Karomatli (Karomatov) (1925–2014). It reveals the main directions of his research: the study, systematisation, and classification of the national musical heritage; the organisation of about thirty ethnomusicological expeditions in Uzbekistan and neighbouring republics; as well as the notation and publication of samples of traditional Uzbek music. His significant contribution to enriching the audio archive of the Institute of Arts of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan and to the establishment of its repository is emphasised. Special attention is given to the scholar’s role in the training of highly qualified specialists and his key contribution to the foundation of the Department of Oriental Music at the Tashkent Conservatory. The article also highlights the musical and public activities of F. Karomatli: he was the initiator and organiser of the first international musicological symposia in Uzbekistan, which received wide recognition abroad. Possessing high scientific authority, he was a member of several international musical organisations. Many of the scientific ideas and initiatives put forward by F. Karomatli remain relevant today. Their continuation and development can be traced in the priorities of contemporary musicology: the study, digital preservation, and promotion of national intangible heritage; the organisation of international festivals of traditional music; and the growing international recognition of the musical art of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
