Measuring arterial blood gas is routinely performed in critically ill patients, and may unravel severe life-threatening acid-base disorders or hypoxemia. It provides the vital information about ventilation, oxygenation, and acid-base status in such persons. These three processes are intimately related to each other in achieving normal oxygenation and acid-balance in the body. The interpretation of arterial blood gas requires a reasonable understanding of respiratory physiology and acid-base balance in the body. Hence, in the following section, first the role of alveolar ventilation, oxygenation, and the maintenance of acid-base homeostasis have been discussed. This is followed by a step-wise approach to analyze the acid-base disorders, if present.DOI: 10.3329/pulse.v3i1.6547Pulse Vol.3(1) July 2009 p15-19

The cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) provides integrative exercise responses including the cardiovascular, pulmonary and skeletal muscle systems. It can be used for the identification of myocardial ischemia…
Background: Persistent elevation of serum ALP is frequently encountered and can pose a diagnostic dilemma due to its association with a wide range of clinical conditions. However, the significance of ALP in these…
BACKGROUND: Longitudinal studies have demonstrated that the risk of cardiovascular disease increases with pulse pressure (PP). However, PP remains an elusive cardiovascular risk factor with findings being inconsistent…
Background: Sarcomatoid carcinoma of the urinary bladder is very rare variety of transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) with a prominent component of spindle-shaped cell. The incidence rate of this tumor is 0.5 % of all…
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in dialysis patients. Brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) is more efficient to handily assess arteriosclerosis than aortic PWV. The…

BACKGROUND: The consumption of chocolate and cocoa has established cardiovascular benefits. Less is known about the effects of chocolate on arterial stiffness, a marker of subclinical cardiovascular disease. The aim of…
It has been reported that coronary atherosclerosis risk assessment using coronary artery calcium and thoracic aorta calcium quantification may improve risk stratification as it can lead to the reclassification of…
Introduction: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) raises cardiovascular risk, but its link with the cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) in diabetic and non-diabetic patients remains unclear. The aim of this study was to clarify…
The profile and prevalence of risk factors in cardiovascular disease (CVD) are different between Western and Asian populations. In the guidelines, tailored approaches following risk stratification based on CVD risk…
