Socio-pragmatic realization of mitigation strategies across different types of discourse

This article provides a systematic analysis of the socio-pragmatic and linguocultural characteristics of mitigation strategies across different types of discourse, including formal diplomatic, informal everyday, and literary discourse. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study examines 300 pragmatic contexts collected over a five-year period. The findings demonstrate that the selection and use of mitigation strategies are directly influenced by social hierarchy, gender factors, and the degree of contextual formality. In diplomatic discourse, indirect speech acts and modal softeners are predominantly employed, whereas in informal communication, social status and gender play a significant role in determining the intensity of mitigation. The article also explores linguocultural challenges associated with translating culture-specific mitigation devices between Uzbek and English and evaluates their degree of pragmatic equivalence. The results contribute to a deeper understanding of mitigation mechanisms in discourse studies, pragmatics, and translation research.
