This research focused on exploring the structural changes occurring in the large intestine after anesthesia exposure using an experimental rat model. Although anesthetics are routinely employed in surgical practices, their impact on intestinal structure has not been fully clarified. In a controlled study involving 48 laboratory rats, three widely used anesthetic agents— isoflurane, sevoflurane, and propofol—were administered in clinically relevant doses to assess their histopathological impact on colonic tissues. Tissue samples were obtained at specific time points (3, 6, 12, and 24 hours after anesthesia) and underwent thorough histological evaluation. These results offer new perspectives on the possible pathways contributing to post-surgical intestinal dysfunction and underscore the importance of anesthetic type and exposure duration in procedures where intestinal health is critical. The findings enhance our understanding of gastrointestinal complications linked to anesthesia and provide practical guidance for anesthetic selection in abdominal surgery settings.
