Epileptic seizures occurring during sleep are associated with marked alterations in sleep architecture. Patients commonly experience difficulties initiating sleep, increased sleep fragmentation, and frequent micro-arousals linked to subclinical epileptic activity. A reduction in deep N3 sleep and REM phase is characteristic, leading to impaired neural restoration, excessive daytime sleepiness, cognitive deficits, and increased fatigue. Disruption of normal sleep cycling contributes to a higher frequency of nocturnal seizures and disease progression. Early detection of sleep structure disturbances using polysomnography and overnight EEG monitoring enables timely identification of nocturnal epileptic events and facilitates optimization of treatment strategies
