Derivational morphology plays a central role in vocabulary growth because it enables speakers to create new lexical items by attaching affixes to existing stems. This paper offers a corpus-based comparison of derivational affix productivity in contemporary Uzbek and English. The analysis relies on a 5-million-word balanced Uzbek corpus and a 5-million-word random sample from the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA), and it evaluates ten high-frequency derivational affixes in each language. Productivity is assessed using Baayen-inspired quantitative indicators, including realized productivity (P), vocabulary size (V), and hapax-based productivity, which together capture frequency distribution and the capacity for innovation. The results show that English affixes display stronger innovation signals, including higher P values and substantially more hapax formations, whereas Uzbek affixes tend to operate more conservatively within stable, semantically transparent derivational patterns. These findings highlight how typological differences shape derivational behavior and lexical expansion across the two languages.
