Annotatsiya

This article looks at how societal anxiety and personal identity are portrayed in Toni Morrison's Beloved and Don DeLillo's White Noise. Both novels examine the difficulties people encounter in creating and maintaining their identities in the face of social, psychological, and historical influences, although coming from distinct historical and cultural settings. DeLillo depicts a postmodern society in White Noise that is dominated by mass media, materialism, and the widespread fear of death, showing how these factors lead to existential ambiguity and a fractured sense of self. Morrison's Beloved, on the other hand, explores the long-lasting psychological and social effects of slavery, showing how painful memories and widespread historical oppression mold individual identities and cause severe distress. This study examines how both authors portray the conflict between the individual and society through a comparative literary analysis, emphasizing the influence of outside factors on self-perception, memory, and belonging. The paper makes the case that social anxiety serves as a key mechanism by which characters negotiate their sense of self, drawing on theories of identity formation, trauma, and postmodernism. In the end, the research shows that identity is portrayed in both books as a dynamic and brittle concept that is constantly impacted by social, historical, and cultural factors.
