In this article, a participatory approach to teaching reading in higher educational institutions is considered. It presents the concepts of reading as a receptive skill, critical reading and a participatory approach. The main types of reading in the framework of teaching specific types of the studied skill are given. The characteristics of critical reading should be considered from different points of view. The concept of “participation” is presented by the authors from the etymological and linguistic sides. The information on the effective combination of reading and writing activities based on joint viewing of the text is analyzed. Therefore, this study may be useful for English teachers when planning a lesson on critical reading through participation.
