This article explores how cultural realia are translated when direct equivalents are unavailable, analysis of the concept of linguistic and cultural maladaptation in literary texts. The study compares the Uzbek edition of Chingiz Aitmatov’s novella “The White Ship” with its English translation by Mirra Ginsburg. Using Lawrence Venuti’s concepts of domestication and foreignization alongside Mona Baker’s and S. Alsaedi’s strategies for the use of translation transformation to compensate for gaps, the research analyzes how culture-specific terms are rendered into English. The phenomenon of untranslatability does not block process of interlingual transmission but serves as guideline when choosing transformation models. The lack of equivalents in the target language was compensated for by the use of borrowed vocabulary to designate toponyms and landscape elements, functional adaptation for social roles, and descriptive explanations for culturally loaded phrases. The study concludes that successful translation of cultural realia depends on balancing foreignization (to keep cultural identity) and domestication (to ensure readability), rather than seeking perfect equivalence.
