Active introduction of dental implantation to clinical practice and further development of dental materials science and technology of prosthodontic treatment caused a high level of modern dental prosthodontics. Since the middle of 1970sdue to the development of new dental treatmentmethods, it became possible to use saved single teeth or even their roots as denture abutments. This caused more wide use of root- and single teeth-supported dentures. One of suchconstructions was called overdentures. The development of dental implantationmade possible creation of new approaches for constructing of implant-supportedoverdentures and caused their more frequent use in clinical practice. In this article the advantages and disadvantages of overdentures are described and indications for their use are recommended.
