This article describes the history of the Karshi desert, the economic networks of the desert population that were formed over the centuries, and the natural geographical factors that led to the settlement of pastoral tribes that moved to the Karshi desert. The processes of development of the Karshi desert by Soviet power, the history of the construction of irrigation structures, and the development of cotton growing were studied. The object of the research is the analysis of the negative impact of the desert on the thousand-year-old economy and ecology as a result of the agrarian policy of the Soviet government.
