The presented scientific article examines and analyzes in detail the history and historiography of the systematic reconnaissance archaeological expedition of the Zarafshan valley carried out in 1934 and 1939 under the leadership of A.Yu. Yakubovsky. The expedition was organized by the State Hermitage together with the State Academy of the history of material culture and the Uzkomstaris, as a result a large amount of archaeological material was collected, contributed to many years of systematic archaeological research in the Zarafshan valley. All this made it possible for A.Yu. Yakubovsky to create theoretical works devoted to the main milestones of urban development in Central Asia. The article based on the publications of the expedition’s leader, V.A. Shishkin, other participants of the expedition and archival materials stored in the archives of the Institute of History of material culture of St. Petersburg.
