The peoples of Central Asia have experienced complex ethnocultural processes throughout their centuries-old history. This situation is observed in all uzbek tribes, including the katagans. Analyzing historical sources, one can see that the katagans were one of the most ancient uzbek clans. Local turkic tribes living in the Amudarya and Syrdarya basins played an important role in the formation of uzbek katagans. This article provides information about the origin and generic divisions of katagans.
