This article explores the association between periodontal disease and the risk of preterm birth in women of reproductive age. Chronic inflammation and microbial invasion from the oral cavity may trigger systemic immune responses, increasing the likelihood of pregnancy complications. The article presents data on the prevalence of periodontitis, its pathophysiological effect on pregnancy, and current strategies for screening and prevention.
