Мақолада Тошкент шаҳрининг қадимий тарихи, унинг номланиши, маъмурий тузилиши ва турли тарихий манбаларда ёритилиши тўғрисида сўз юритилган. Тошкент ҳақидаги илк маълумотлар эрамиздан аввалги III–II асрларга оид хитой манбаларида «Ши» номи билан, форс манбаларида «Чоҷ» деб келтирилгани, VII–VIII асрларда араблар истилосидан кейин «Бинкат» номи оммалашгани баён қилинган. Мақолада Зайниддин Восифийнинг «Бадоеъ ал-вакоеъ» асари, Камолиддин Биноий, Муҳаммад Солиҳ ва бошқа муаррихлар асарларида Тошкент тарихига доир маълумотлар таҳлил қилинган. Шунингдек, шаҳарнинг XVI–XIX асрлардаги ижтимоий-сиёсий ҳаёти, ҳунармандчилик, савдо, мадраса ва меъморий ёдгорликлар ҳақида маълумотлар келтирилган.
