The problem of assessing learning outcomes is one of the most important and controversial problems of pedagogical theory and practice. An analysis of scientific, practical and methodological literature shows that today there is no any clarity on what is considered an educational result. Assessment is the central link in the formation of opinion between teacher and student and is understood as confirmation of the result of educational activities. This article discusses the main components of the system for assessing students' educational achievements, approaches to understanding assessment in educational practice, reflecting the attitude of participants in the educational process to assessment, as well as approaches to assessing students in English classes based on assessment criteria.
