The article analyses the historical roots of early cultural and civilizational contacts between the peoples of Central Asia and Japan, as well as the methodological foundations of their study. Drawing on the concepts of cultural diffusion, transregional communications and mediated civilizational exchange, the author examines the place of Central Asia in the Great Silk Road system, the intermediary activity of Sogdian merchants, the spread of Buddhism through the region to Japan, and the artefacts of Central Asian art preserved in the Shōsōin repository of the Nara period. Particular attention is paid to the formation of Central Asian studies in Japanese oriental scholarship, including the legacy of the Ōtani expeditions. Early contacts are assessed as the civilizational foundation of contemporary Uzbek–Japanese relations, and prospects for further research are outlined.
