The article presents a sociological analysis of concepts of state and social governance in Western Europe in the Middle Ages, as well as methods of state governance in states that formed in Western Europe from the early to late Middle Ages. It examines the evolution and stages of development of state governance, as well as the political, legal, social, and religious-ideological foundations of state governance. It also provides a sociological analysis of the concepts of state and social governance presented in the works of Western thinkers: Thomas Aquinas in “The Value of Theology”, Roger Bacon in “The Great Experiment”, Dante Alighieri in “On Monarchy”, Marcello of Padua in “The Defender of Peace”, Niccolò Machiavelli in “The Prince”, Jean Bodin in “Six Books of the Commonwealth”, Thomas Hobbes in “Leviathan”, John Locke in “An Essay Concerning Human Understanding”, and Charles Louis de Montesquieu in “The Spirit of Laws”.
