The Hanafi madhhab is eponymously named after Imam Abu Hanifa (r.a.). However, during the scholar’s lifetime, it had not yet fully crystallized as a distinct school of law. His doctrine was primarily developed and elevated to a broad scale by his disciples and renowned jurists who succeeded him. The deep rooting of the Hanafi school commenced specifically after the demise of Abu Hanifa (r.a.) through the agency of his students. The widespread dissemination of the madhhab is largely attributed to the contributions of Abu Yusuf (r.a.), who operated from the position of Chief Justice, the highest judicial office of that era. Imam Muhammad, conversely, facilitated the extensive proliferation of the Hanafi school principally through his written corpus. Consequently, the number of Hanafi jurists increased, leading to the further expansion and development of the madhhab in other territories. Another factor contributing to the school s broad acceptance was its relative leniency and flexibility compared to other legal schools. This article discusses specific prominent jurists who contributed to the evolution of the Hanafi madhhab.
