This research describes a discursive-pragmatic analysis of the wish/desire category in English and in Uzbek. Using a bilingual corpus of conversational transcripts, interviews, social-media texts, and literary excerpts, we investigate the realization, negotiation, and understanding of wishes and desires in different languages. Using the Speech Act Theory, the Theory of Politeness, and Hallidayan’s approach regarding modality, we analyze the wishes in each of the languages focusing on illocutionary force, modal variation, mood/tense, and politeness strategies. In our coding, we focused on the direct versus indirect and explicit versus implicit modal as well as the theoretical contribution of hedges, evaluativity, insincerity, and social alignment. Across genres, we explain the language-specific tendencies (e.g. English’s preference for modals like would like and would prefer; Uzbek’s use of mood/tense markers and evidentials for stance) and universal tendencies (e.g. future wishes, request as embedded wishes). The frameworks of address, situational formality, and genre define the speaker’s expected roles and elucidates the complex interplay of agency, face, and solidarity in wish/desire statements. The implications of this analysis will inform research on cross-linguistic pragmatics, translation studies, and pragmatics-informed language.
