Annotatsiya

The article examines the functional and semantic nature of polysemy in military terminology across English, Russian and Uzbek. It argues that polysemy is not a deviation from terminological precision but a natural mechanism of lexical development shaped by cognitive processes, historical changes in military structures and the influence of political and media discourse. The study identifies radial, chain and mixed models of semantic expansion, as well as three types of cross-linguistic equivalence: symmetric, asymmetric and lacunar. Special attention is given to pragmatic and cultural-historical factors that determine semantic divergence among the three languages. The findings show that polysemy plays a key role in ensuring communicative flexibility, enabling military terms to function across professional, political and everyday contexts while reflecting national cultural specificity. The results highlight the importance of a comprehensive cross-linguistic approach to military terminology, particularly in contexts of international military cooperation, translation and multilingual communication.
